100 QUESTIONS FOR WEBMASTERS
written 2026/09/30. all information is correct at the time of writing. if you wanna do this questionnaire yourself you can find a blank version here
1. Please introduce yourself.
i'm beth and i make bullshit for the internet
2. How long have you been making websites?
about as long as i've had this website, so a little over 2 years
3. And what got you into the hobby?
my parents got me a book for learning html YEARS ago (couldn't tell you when exactly), so i guess you could trace it back to that. though a lot of the html i know now i learned WAY afterwards
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
i usually favour personal sites, or just sites with topics i find interesting or unique
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
i usually have a very vague idea in my head for what i want to do with the site design beforehand, then after that i just go ham with it
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
i think just general web design sense from the early/mid 2000s have been a significant influence on a lot of my web-related work. i can't really point out any site in specific though.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
working on the css stuff. that and seeing the fruits of my labor afterwards
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
basically everything else lmao
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
for most of them yes. it's okay to deviate a bit if the task at hand warrants it though
10. How confident are you with CSS?
i think i'm decent with it
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
i have no idea what that is
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
gotta be the <div>. literally an infinite amount of things you can do with that element. it's also got a funny name because "div" is also a british slang word for a stupid person
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
i always make the background first. it's pretty much what makes the entire thing for me
14. Do you know JavaScript?
a little bit
15. How about PHP?
no. i'm not doing anything that would warrant me learning it rn
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
yep. i like consistency
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
content. i've definitely found myself caring less and less about the design of my site in recent times
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
no and yes
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
being a 2010s kid i don't really hold any nostalgia for the time period most of them go for so they don't really do as much for me in that department as they do for other people. a lot of them do look pretty cool though
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
i do!
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
i think they're pretty neat. they're a smart way to get your site out to more people in a way that doesn't feel really intrusive. some people have gotten really creative with what they can do with them too
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
i dig 'em. they're how i've been able to find a lot of sites i like
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
i'd probably do something different. change is good
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
sometimes
25. What text editor do you use?
vscode
26. Why do you use that one?
haven't found anything better yet
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
i use neocities' own file hosting. sites that don't use their own server for image hosting are a massive pet peeve of mine. it's especially irritating if they use a service like imgur because that isn't available in my country so i need to use a vpn to be able to view the site properly. like come on dude your server is right fucking there it's really not that hard
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
both are good for different reasons. i personally prefer neocities for the bigger server space and community
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
neocities says i'm currently using 2.64MB of space. i imagine that's not gonna change by a whole lot in the forseeable future.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
no but i really should
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
i have no strong preferences towards either. i've seen both of them done really well
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
i respect your intelligence enough to be able to figure out this answer on your own
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
oh god no. maintaining this site is one of my favourite things to do in my spare time. i also figure it's lot better for my mental health than just doomscrolling all the time
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
i have a few (dragonaero finish your goddamn site already)
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
not yet
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
nah not really. i'd say on average i update this site once every month or so and even then the updates aren't particularly big. i don't have a schedule and i'm not constantly working on new additions to the site like some other people do
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
all the goddamn time. every few months i always see a flaw with my site design that really really bothers me and it makes me want to start from scratch. i've been using my current design for about a week now as of writing. hopefully this time around it actually sticks around for the long run
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
i suppose it's a mixture of all three, but i think my site tends to gravitate more towards what i do rather than what i am. i like to stay private about a lot of things
39. Do you do web design professionally?
nope
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
no, that sounds utterly miserable
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
not really. i do have a public email though
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
i mostly keep social media around for friends who also use it and also aren't nearly as passionate about indie web stuff as i am. it's also a pretty big part of my main hobbies so i kinda have to keep it around in some shape or form. i do wish i was able to rely on it less
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
i use discord. again it's mostly just to talk to friends, i'm not active in any big servers
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
nah. i find it too distracting most of the time
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
i have just the one at the moment. don't see the point in making another right now
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
just the one (me)
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
i try to present as just myself, though i keep some things about me relatively obscure for obvious reasons. trying to be someone i'm not sounds exhausting
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
i've met some cool people
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
yeah. i don't take much issue with either
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
don't use external images hosting. as for why refer to my tangent at question 27
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
i have no opinion. just do what you think is right for your website
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
no. semantic html is confusing and scary
53. Do you consider different browsers?
yep. specifically chromium and firefox. not accounting for chromium was one of the mistakes i made with my previous layout
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
i use firefox. you should use it because it's not chrome
55. And what OS are you on?
windows
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
i think linux is pretty cool - i used it as my daily driver for a little while - but from my experience you can't really rely on it to work exactly how you want it to all the time. and i can probably spend the entire rest of this page dunking on windows but at the very least i can rely on software to just work with it. i'm not gonna rag on people for using one os over the other because they both have their advantages
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
nope. never really bothered to learn how to do it
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
i don't personally take much issue with it, unless it's like really loud or annoying for no reason. i understand why a lot of people really don't like it though
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
i like 'em. i run one myself, although it's currently dead as fuck. i need to find more of 'em to join
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
i don't really care about web shrines to be honest
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
i hope not
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
whatever my site looks like right now as of when you're reading this is my ideal website
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
i wouldn't necessarily call myself an artist but i do make my own assets
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
i just use google, i don't really use any specific resource sites
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
i'm a chronic procrastinator
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
just be yourself i guess. don't worry too much about trying to do something crazy unique. as long as what you do have is interesting there will be people out there who'll vibe with it
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
in cases when i know i'll be using a specific style in more than one page i put them in a separate file. sometimes i do something slightly different from the other pages and in those case i just think it's quicker and easier to put those styles in the head of the page
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
i have no opinion
69. How about table-based layouts?
refer to previous question
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
i don't really think about site layouts in those terms tbh
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
when im maintaining sites in the long run i guess i use html more. after a certain point you don't have to spend nearly as much time on the css
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
no. if i wanna store my thoughts i use my brain
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
i make them as i need them. i always consider what content that'd be on the site before i do the design
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
i guess technically i'd be somewhere in the middle. i'm pretty confident in my website making ability regardless
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
i do actually! in fact i implore other people to do the same. it's pretty useful if you see something cool on a site and you wanna know how it's done
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
i followed a really long and boring course on youtube (i didn't know about w3schools or anything like that at the time). then i picked up other tidbits of knowledge from google and looking at other sites
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
nowadays i try not to but some of the things i used to do with my previous layout would probably make a professional web designer weep
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
why do you keep asking these layout-related questions? just do what you want dude it's ok
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
i use px. or i just do 100%. i know that's not very good practice but yeah
80. Do you have a favourite font?
not really
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
i would be open to it. no idea how i'd go about it or what i'd even do with it though
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
yeah, every so often i find myself sifting through people's button walls looking for new sites
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
nah. if i wanna keep up with people on neocities i just use neocities' following feature. either that or i look for an rss feed i can subscribe to if they dont have a neocities profile. if someone bookmarked my site i would be wondering why they didn't just do either of those instead
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
i'm not really going out of my way to impress people with this site (incredibly selfless of me i know). honestly just vibe with the things i do is more than good enough for me
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
i like collecting vintage games and vinyls. maybe i should show em off on the site. maybe one day
86. How often and for how long are you online?
every day, all the time. i need to get some better hobbies
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
anyone who cares enough to look at it
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
no
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
i like making games. it's like, the main thing i do. i have also done some web programming but i don't do it a whole lot because i don't like javascript lol
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
they're fine. i'm not that familiar with them tbh
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
nope. i just don't concern myself with metrics like that
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
i do not
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
no i just write it straight into the editor. i don't really see the advantage of doing it otherwise
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
i am cringe and i am free
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
oh yeah absolutely. a lot of it did get lost to time but i'm pretty sure you can still find some of it if you know where to look. i mean i'm not gonna tell you where it is lol
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
i'd probably just keep it up. wouldn't hurt nobody
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
i don't reveal a whole lot. i've already said i prefer to stay private about my personal life but it's also because i'm just not that interesting of a person irl lol
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
i love all my friends equally :)
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
nope. my site takes up so little space anyway i don't really see the point in going through the effort right now
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
i thought it was fun, it really made me think. and i hope you've had fun reading it!
